## Questions about availability and prices

### How do I know if a domain is available?

Type the name: the checker asks the registry, then one registrar for the price. As of 12 October 2026, among the names we track, 28,290,443 are free to register and 3,068,213 are held; 425,592 were listed for sale by their holder on 12 October 2026.

### Why can a cheap first year cost more later?

Some endings sell the first year far below the renewal price. On 37% of the 891 endings we price, the cheapest renewal is a trap. The checker prints the renewal and the five-year cost beside the price.

### What can I do when the name is held?

Check whether its holder lists it for sale, or watch it: an expired name goes through grace, redemption and pending delete before it drops. The WHOIS lookup shows the stage it is in. It gives an exact drop day only on endings whose pending delete period we have verified, and only when we saw the name enter that stage from redemption; otherwise it shows the stage and no day.

### Can I check a list of names?

Visitors check one name at a time. A free account checks 5 names a run, 250 for $19 a month.

### Can I check one word on every ending?

Type the word: visitors see it on 5 endings, then counts for the rest. A free account checks it on every ending that sold in the last 12 months.

### How many free checks do I get?

One live check a day, reset at 00:00 UTC. A name already in our records shows its stored answer with its date and costs nothing. A free account reads 100 names live a day.

## Definitions

- Free: Nobody holds the name: any registrar can register it today at its list price.
- Held: Someone holds the name. It may be for sale by its holder, or come free when it expires.
- Premium: Free to register, but the registry sets a higher price than the usual one.
- Renewal trap: A first year sold far below the renewal price, so the second year costs much more.
- Cost to hold: The first year plus four renewals: what the name costs over five years.
- Rating band: Prime, strong, niche or thin: a coarse grade of the name. The score behind it is for members.
